Elk Lake Trail Run
Elk Lake BC is an easy 10k trail run or walk loop In Victoia British Columbia. This beautiful lake is home to Dynamic Race Events Olympic Triathlon event and the Victoria Ironman 70.3. This 1072 acre park in Saanichton is the perfect trail run for a mostly flat training session.
Most of this trail you will forget how close you are to civilization with it's densely covered trails. Seventy percent of these trails are a continual view of Elk Lake and Beaver Lake. You often share this trail with horseback riders so take care as you come up to these amazing creatures.
You will find convienant parking at the Rowing Club off the main highway, Hamsterlay Beach and Beaver Lake. The parking is safe and all parking lots have washrooms for visitors. Hamsterlay Beach includes a sepperate change room for swimmers for convienant changing.
Early Morning the east side of the lake is exposed to the warm morning and early afternoon sun but the better half remains covered.
We recommend this trail for beginners as it offers the best footing and you will end up enjoying the fruits of your labor. The trail is fairly flat and gives runners a perfect oportunity to safely move around for the exception of a few tree roots.
Not to mention, the important warning to keep your dogs away from the water as the blue algae are very toxic to our four-legged companions and deadly in many cases. The water usually is worse primarily in the winter time and has a metalic look to it.
Swim Elk Lake
This is a perfect trail for working a race pace or even pulling back in a recovery. Many triathletes use this as one of their local open water training sites. The lake is also home to the UVIC rowing club and traffic can get busy.
Keep in mind many many triathletes will train at low traffic times and will basically swim from Hamsterly Beach towards the Rowing club parallel to the highway. This path usually stays clear of major boat traffic. Bright color swim caps and floats recommended.
However, If you do plan to go on an epic length ask a friend to paddle board beside you. It really is a win-win for any open water athlete.
Keep NERDING
