Triathletes - Lauren Babineau and Cody Sahlstrom

The Dynamically Courageous Duo - Triathletes Lauren Babineau and Cody Sahlstrom

Germany Kent said it best, “Be yourself….and make the world adjust!” This is very true for Lauren Babineau and Cody Sahlstrom two local victoria triathletes. The dynamic duo work full-time yet let no obstacle get in their way of pursuing the Ironman triathlon dream. This hard work and dedication show not only in training but in their relationship with each other. This is their heroic journey.

Your endeavors in triathlon are amazing and your stories are very inspiring within the community. What’s your story behind triathlon and what about it got you hooked on the sport?

Amazing and inspiring! Thanks, man. We’re glad to hear we’re making an impact. Triathlon has certainly made an impact on our lives so it’s pretty cool to share our journey through it. The sport of triathlon attracts driven and motivated people. We love how it highlights our dedication, our drive, our focus. We like the challenge of exploring our limits and pushing those boundaries. We like improving. But we also like that it’s not easy; we thrive off the grind.

Maintaining a balanced life between work, training and everything else is a challenge unto itself! With your brilliant achievements and commitments, how do you both balance this lifestyle?

Right!? Truthfully its a bit of a grind... it consists of 5 am alarms daily for workout #1 (we make time coffee), We both work full-time jobs 8-5 so generally, we’ll hit workout #2 around 6 pm. Tuesdays – Thursdays Cody teaches boxing so we've incorporated it into our training as well. The routine doesn't change much bi-weekly but the cool thing we’ve found is the balance of having each other.

As triathletes, we’re trying to fit a lot into an already busy schedule but we’ve struck a balance that enhances our relationship (not take away from it) and being able to take on these big goals and achieve big things together.

Triathletes are nerds when it comes to training. What is your favorite gear to train with during your swim, bike, run, or rest & nutrition?

I mean we love our bikes first and foremost.

Lauren races on a Trek Speed Concept but secretly prefers her beautiful Trek Madone for her daily training.

Cody spends all of his time on his QuintanaRoo simply just because he loves it.

And to randomly list some of our favourite and most important tools are: our espresso machine, Vitamix blender, GoPro, Zwift, Fatso, and smoothie bowls.

You recently raced Ironman 70.3 Indian Wells and did extremely well. Congratulations on your hard efforts! Do you have any races on the list for 2020 and any big goals to manifest there?

Hey, thanks for the kudos! It was a great race for both of us and we were stoked to end 2019 on such a positive result. For 2020, we’re looking at Mexico in May, Oliver in June, potentially Elk Lake, Worlds in Edmonton, Ironman Canada in August, and then back to Indian Wells again for December.

Lauren – I was stoked to get my first top 10 results in the Pro women’s field in 2019 so I just want to keep climbing that ladder closer to standing on the podium this year.

Cody – My plan is to use the first couple of races as a build. I want to head into Edmonton in my best form with my best fitness to try and snag a podium spot. If all goes well I will aim to compete in the pro field by the end of the year at Indian Wells.
