Local Victoria triathlete Paige Quinn doesn’t wear a mask, dawn a cape or leaps tall buildings in a single bound. She is a local athlete that is more than just a role model she is a hero that continues to inspire the world around her. We had the chance to ask her a few questions about her path in triathlon and what drives Paige to achieve her best most authentic self.
“Courage is the most important of all the virtues because without courage, you can't practice any other virtue consistently.” Maya Angelou
You've been participating in triathlon events for a while now. What sparked your interest in the sport of triathlon and what keeps you motivated to keep going?
When I got to the University of Victoria, I joined ultimate frisbee, but then got multiple concussions and had to shift from team sports to recovery. I was encouraged to do low impact activity so started regularly swimming and biking. Soon enough I was back on my feet and approved to be running again.
A friend told me about this “triathlon thing” and he decided to practice his coaching skills by creating a training schedule. I followed the workouts, signed up for the 2017 MEC Sprint Race and ended up finishing first in my age group. Ever since that day I have been hooked on the sport. I am motivated to keep going because I love working hard and seeing positive results, being surrounded by an incredibly supportive community, and it keeps both my mental and physical health so healthy.
Balancing a work-life schedule is challenging to begin with. How do you manage to add triathlon training into that schedule?
Although my schedule is quite busy, athletics have been a core part of my day ever since I was little. The thing with triathlon though, is that you’re training for THREE sports, and have to be constantly fueling- which means really having to master time management. I have done this by prioritizing what is important to my day- sleep, food prep, fitness, work, core relationships, mindfulness, and spending less time on things that aren’t productive or healthy.
You have a pretty big year ahead of you competing. Tell us a little about your 2020 year and about some of your upcoming races?
My main triathlons this year include the Kona Half Ironman in Hawaii, May 2020, and the Triathlon Worlds (standard distance) in Edmonton in August. My goals are to ideally come top three in each of these races, but at the end of the day, I am satisfied to be physically able to participate and have the opportunity to travel.
Along with these races I am hoping to do multiple trail running events, including the Finlayson Arm 28km in September 2020. But, with that being said I am super stoked to last-minute sign up for other races.. as that seems to be a recurring theme with me!
What would your advice be to anyone wanting to try triathlon for their first time?
My advice would be to sign up for a race, find a training schedule, an accountability buddy (whether it’s a friend or a triathlon group) and set achievable goals. Whenever I do a race, regardless of the intensity of the event, my main goal is to finish smiling!
Another piece of advice would be to only get into triathlon if you are willing to make the time for it. It’s an incredible sport, but it does take time and if you want to finish smiling, you need to make sure you have a well-balanced schedule that can prioritize training, rest, and proper nutrition.
